Best of the Week #105

Dear friends,

As you know, Mollie’s grand adventure is underway!  And while places like Nepal, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam surpass DC in terms of beauty and mystery, these lovely places aren't bastions of wifi.  So, while Mollie is off trekking, climbing, dirt biking, and generally having the adventure we all dream of, I’ll be guest writing here on Eat, Run, Read.  Mollie’s left some pretty big shoes to fill, but I'll do my best to fill them!

I should start by telling you that I’m no stranger to Eat, Run, Read.  I've been an avid reader for the better part of a year and a half, and I'm proud to say that I've even been mentioned a few times.  I’m the sweaty, exhausted, rather scruffy gentleman standing next to Mollie in this photo:

Yes, I own stars & stripe shorts, and no, you can't borrow them.

When I’m not running, I’m biking, playing soccer, or wandering aimlessly between coffee shops.  And, until Mollie returns from Asia, I’ll be reporting as to her whereabouts, and trying my best (probably unsuccessfully) to convey how awesome her trip actually is!  But that’s enough about me.  On to the Best of the Week!

In Mollie’s part of the world, this happened.

Valery Rozov made the jump from a point 7,220m (23,680ft) above sea level.

Really?  No, thanks!  I’ll take the stairs.

Also, when The Onion is good, it’s good.

Bringing an end to a high-profile scandal that has shaken the media industry, BuzzFeed staff writer Tim Mills resigned his position Wednesday following widespread accusations that he plagiarized content in the recent slideshow “10 Llamas Who Wish They Were Models.”

Llamas will never be as good looking as alpacas anyway, so they might as well stop trying.

Look at these handsome devils!

This week marks the start of the French Open.  And I don’t know about you, but I love the red clay of Roland Garros.  And this guy ain’t bad either:

With any luck, we'll be seeing this again in a couple weeks!

In other news, it looks as though DC might be spared some 4th of July fireworks, at least temporarily…

Late last week, however, Kokesh decided to abandon this march [on DC] in favor of a much larger effort to bring down the entire federal government. In a statement written from a jail cell in Philadelphia (Kokesh faced charges for allegedly resisting arrest during a pro-marijuana rally. He now says he’s been released), the gun activist called for his supporters to form a secessionist “army”

I wonder if his secessionist “army” will be required to fill out expense reports  Expense reports are the worst!

Changing gears, I’m a firm believer that, as a society, we don’t wear superhero costumes nearly as often as we could or should.  I have fits of jealously whenever I see a kid wearing a superhero costume, especially if it involves a cape.  So I applaud you, Jaden Smith!

No cape, but I'll take it!

And while we’re talking about the Smith family, this is, without question, the BEST OF THE WEEK!  Happy weekend, folks!
